Senator Ali Ndume has been removed as the Chief Whip of the 10th Senate for his utterances against President Bola Tinubu. The Senate replaced Ndume with Senator Tahir Monguno after receiving a directive to do so in a letter from the party’s National Chairman, Umar Ganduje, and National Secretary, Senator Bashir Ajibola. The Oyo State Police Command has warned civilians to ignore a viral video posted on social media by suspected separatist groups issuing eviction orders to herders in the state’s Igboho area. SP Adewale Osifeso, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, issued the statement in Ibadan on Wednesday. The impeachment of Philip Shaibu as Edo State’s Deputy Governor has been overturned by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday. Justice Omotosho ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement to office after the Edo State House of Assembly failed to follow due process in impeaching him. Justice Omotosho also deferred the appointment of the new Deputy Governor, who succeeded Shaibu. The court ruled that the charge on which the House of Assembly based its impeachment proceedings was legally untenable and did not constitute gross misconduct. New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez was found guilty on 16 counts of accepting bribes, including gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz, in exchange for assisting foreign governments.  The jury convicted Menendez after more than 12 hours of deliberation over three days during the nine-week trial. Menendez, formerly the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, now faces decades in prison. Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has approved the appointment of three second-class emirs of Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, effective immediately.  According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, on Wednesday, the new emirates will be second-class, with Kano remaining first-class. Yusuf designated the newly appointed Alhaji Muhammad Karaye as the Emir of Karaye. He was the district head of Rogo before his most recent position. Alhaji Muhammad Umar was named Emir of Rano. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Tuesday, vowed to shut down the country for a month in protest over the National Assembly’s intentions to deregulate the national minimum wage.  The NLC’s ultimatum comes as the country waits for a new national minimum wage after months of negotiations between organised labour, the federal government, and the organised private sector. The winner of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will get an increased prize of N200 million, up 33.3% from last season’s N150 million.  Gbenga Elegbeleye, chairman of the NPFL board, revealed the increase following the board’s and club owners’ Annual General Meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, when the teams also agreed on the next season’s scheduled kick-off date of August 31 and a 38-game schedule. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, announced on Tuesday that as of July 15, 2024, it had registered 3,623 suspected cholera cases and 103 deaths throughout 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory.  Dr. Jide Idris, the NCDC’s Director General, announced at a press briefing in Abuja that the current cholera houtbreak has extended to 187 local government areas, with a cumulative case fatality rate of 2.8% since the beginning of the year. A High Court in Asaba, Delta State’s capital, has sentenced Onuwa Ijie to death and Nwanozie Uzor to 14 years in prison for murder and conspiracy to commit murder of twin boys Chidalu and Chigozie Agwunobi for ritual purposes. Justice Onome Marshal-Umukoro presided over the sentencing of two murderers of seven-year-old boys. Mrs. Paula Akpoguma, a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Justice, led the prosecution, which called five witnesses as evidence in the case.
