One person has been killed and two others were injured after being shot by a suspected sniper at a Texas immigration center, according to officials.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the event in Dallas.

The sniper attack occurred on Wednesday morning inside a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center.

The incident followed a series of attacks against ICE facilities across the United States in recent months.

The motivation and objectives of the attack are unknown. Officials told Fox News that no law enforcement officers were hurt.

“While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them,” Noem said. “It must stop.”

Dallas police said, X, “The preliminary investigation determined that a suspect opened fire at a government building from an adjacent building.

“Two people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. One victim died at the scene. The suspect is deceased.”

According to preliminary evidence, a sniper shot victims in a “secure detainee location” from outside the facility, according to Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons.

He stated that three people, including the accused shooter, were “down.”

“We’re not sure of their condition,” Lyons said.

ICE’s Dallas field office has been the target of many protests this summer.

A Justice Department official told the BBC’s US partner, CBS, that the institution had received a bomb threat in late August. A suspect has been arrested.

Last month, shots were fired at ICE headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, in what authorities called a “targeted attack” on federal officials.

There were no reported injuries in that incident, which ICE attributed to “political rhetoric” and “misinformation” regarding the Trump administration’s detention practices.

Another shooting occurred on the Fourth of July public holiday at an ICE facility in Alvarado, Texas, after a protest turned into a confrontation with officers. An officer was shot in the neck but survived.

US Vice-President JD Vance posted on X on Wednesday, “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”
