Erika Kirk, widow of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been unanimously chosen as the new chief executive of Turning Point USA, the influential youth political group he founded.

Erika Kirk, 36, was elected CEO and Chair of the Board on Thursday, just days after her husband was fatally shot during a campus event at Utah Valley University. Kirk, 31, was killed by a single rifle round allegedly fired from a rooftop by 22-year-old Tyler Robinson.

Turning Point USA’s board praised Erika’s leadership, saying her appointment would safeguard the organisation’s mission of galvanising young voters to Republican causes. The group has been under heightened scrutiny since the attack, with its future role in next year’s US midterm elections closely watched.

“Charlie prepared all of us for a moment like this,” the board declared. “It is our pride to announce Erika Kirk as the new CEO and Chair of the Board.”

In a defiant video message after her husband’s murder, Erika vowed to continue his mission: “You have no idea the fire that you have ignited within this wife. The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry.”

Former US president Donald Trump has previously credited Charlie Kirk with boosting young voter turnout and playing a decisive role in his rise to the White House.

With Erika Kirk now at the helm, Turning Point USA faces its most critical test, yet carrying on her late husband’s legacy while steering the conservative youth movement through turbulent times.
