The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) corps marshal has deployed breathalysers to motor parks and highways to check for drunk driving.

Shehu Mohammed told reporters on Friday in Abuja that the deployment was in collaboration with the Beer Sectorial Group (BSG).

He stated that the primary goal of the deployment was to identify and halt drivers who were operating their vehicles while under the influence, as well as to reduce the number of road fatalities.

Mohammed said, “Another key road traffic infraction we have taken action against is driving under the influence of alcohol and other substances.”

“This is a deadly road use behaviour that has led to unprecedented crashes and fatalities on the highways.”

The corps marshal said the FRSC had also embarked on “aggressive” sensitization campaigns for road users.

“This time around, we are taking it down to their doorsteps. We have started to educate these drivers at their loading bays, transit camps, and trailer parks.

“The essence of the exercise is to ensure that the advocacy appeals to the conscience of these drivers against unnecessary contravention of traffic rules,“ he said.

Mohammed called on motorists, especially commuters, to believe that the corps could only achieve a crash-free celebration if they played their part.

“When drivers drive recklessly, commuters have the right to speak up and report such drivers to FRSC operatives or any other highway security outposts,” he said.
