The human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccine is cutting cases of cervical cancer by nearly 90%, the first real-world data shows. Cancer Research UK described the findings as “historic”, and said it showed the vaccine was saving lives. The researchers said the success meant those who were vaccinated may need far fewer cervical smear tests too. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women around the world, killing more than 300,000 each year. Almost nine-in-10 deaths are in low and middle…

By Orisha Recently, there’s a been a growing call to name Bandits as Terrorists. This was particularly highlighted by the proscription of the group, IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) by the federal government. Some view this group as a self determination group and believe the proscription was an anti-ethnic initiative to silence the clamour for secession. Further, increasingly heightened insecurity challenges and atrocities by the ‘novel’ Bandit groups seems to justify the sentiments of bias that many believe was existing in the Federal Government. Matters came to a head for many when bandits were seen to be receiving patronage and…

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan at the end of August the persecution of the country’s LGBT+ community has ramped up, forcing many to live in hiding, fearing for their lives. “We now know for sure the Taliban has a ‘kill list’,” said the head of the Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian NGO helping under-threat Afghans to flee into exile. The situation for the LGBT+ community in Afghanistan has never been easy. Same-sex relations have always been taboo in the Muslim-majority country, where – even under the former Western-backed government – non-heterosexual relations were illegal and could lead to up…

Liverpool swept into the last 16 of the Champions League with a comfortable win over 10-man Atletico Madrid that ensured they will finish top of Group B. Early goals by Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane, both created by Trent Alexander-Arnold, put the Reds in full command and there was no way back for the Spanish side once Felipe was sent off before half-time. Jurgen Klopp’s side should have dished out more punishment after the break but missed a flurry of chances and Jota had another strike ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee. Atletico thought they had pulled…
