The Defense Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that its official X account was compromised during an attempted unauthorized entry.
The DHQ, in a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defense Information, Major General Samaila Uba, stated that the incident was being regarded as a cybersecurity issue, with technical measures being implemented to secure the account.
The statement read in part, “The Defence Headquarters wishes to inform members of the public, the media, and all stakeholders that it has detected an attempted unauthorized compromise of its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“The incident is currently being treated as a cybersecurity matter, and appropriate technical measures have been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorized access.”
Uba stated that attempts were underway to fully recover control of the official account and warned the public to disregard any strange, unauthorized, or deceptive content uploaded from the account during the period.
“The Defence Headquarters assures the public that efforts are ongoing to fully restore control of the official account. Consequently, members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorized, or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period,” he said.
He stated the DHQ was dedicated to maintaining high standards of information security and ensuring that Nigerians continued to get accurate, timely, and credible information on the activities and operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“We appreciate the understanding and vigilance of the public and will provide further updates as necessary.”
To maintain continuous communication, the DHQ asked the public to rely on its verified accounts on other platforms, such as Facebook under the name “Defence Headquarters Nigeria,” Instagram at @defenceheadquarters, and its WhatsApp Channel, Defense Headquarters Nigeria.
