Luis Suarez, Uruguay’s record goalscorer, who also plays for Inter Miami, will play his final match for La Celeste this Friday.
Suarez announced his retirement from the Uruguay national team on Monday, capping off an illustrious international career that included 142 caps and 69 goals, the most in La Celeste history.
The former Barcelona striker will play his final match in Uruguay’s World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Friday at Estadio Centenario, the team’s main home stadium.
Suarez is one of Uruguay’s top players, and he has made numerous contributions to the South American team. Suarez made his national team debut on February 8, 2007, in a 3-1 victory against rival Colombia.
He rose to fame during the 2010 World Cup, starting the bulk of Uruguay’s games.
Suarez’s illustrious club career has not been without controversy.
The forward committed an infamous handball to save a goal that would have earned Ghana a penalty. Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty kick, and Uruguay advanced in a shootout.
