The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) attempt to arrest Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi State, proved abortive as he evaded arrest.

Resistance by security operatives at the Kogi State governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, immediately led to an altercation with armed officials of the anti-graft agency on Wednesday night.

The incumbent Kogi governor, Ahmed Ododo, reportedly whisked his predecessor away.

Earlier on Wednesday, the EFCC said Bello is not in its custody and that the ex-governor remains wanted “for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges.” However, Bello’s media office asserted that the former governor was present with Ododo at the EFCC office, but no interrogation took place.

In April, the EFCC declared Yahaya Bello wanted for an alleged financial crime amounting to N80.2 billion.

The Commission later confirmed that Usman Ododo, Bello’s successor, whisked the former governor away after the EFCC stormed his residence in the Wuse, Abuja, and attempted to arrest him.

Despite many adjournments, the former governor has not appeared before the trial judge in court.
