Tottenham secured their second league win at Stamford Bridge in 36 years, as 10-man Chelsea squandered the chance to move third in the Premier League table.
England midfielder Cole Palmer was dismissed in the 80th minute after picking up his second yellow card, capping a miserable evening for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Spurs had gone ahead three minutes earlier, and in rather fortunate fashion.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, making his first league start for the Blues after Emi Martinez suffered an injury, punched the ball into his own net when he jumped under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke at a corner.
French forward Mathys Tel made it two in the 87th minute, firing a low strike from 25 yards after a fine solo run from the halfway line.
The match was played in torrential rain, and tempers flared on the pitch as well in a fiery derby encounter.
Palmer collected both of his bookings within a nine-minute spell, one on either side of Tottenham’s opener. His first yellow card came for barging into Mateus Fernandes, and the second followed a late challenge on Conor Gallagher.
Spurs climbed to 12th place, having won two matches in a week after claiming their first league victory of the campaign on Monday with a 3-1 home win over Coventry City.
