Sen. Shehu Sani has commended the suspension and arrest of the embattled governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

In a tweet he made via his verified Twitter page, Sani, however, called for an independent team of auditors outside of the CBN to “thoroughly probe the apex bank and tell the country how the bank was run under Buhari’s Emefiele”.

The Chronicle NG reported that Tinubu ordered the suspension and arrest of Emefiele yesterday, June 9, 2023.

In a statement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the suspension will allow for investigation of Emefiele who has been accused of corruption.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect,” the statement said.

“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.

“Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.” he stated.

Sani argued that the CBN under the watch of Emefiele was an “ATM of the Cabal, a canteen, and a cash cow of the parasitic elite of the past administration”.

His tweet reads : “The eviction of Emefiele is commendable. The appointment of Shonubi as acting Governor is commendable. But the Housecleaning of the CBN can only be done by engaging a team of auditors from OUTSIDE of the CBN.

“Only they can professionally and thoroughly probe the apex Bank and tell the country how the Bank was run under Buhari’s Emefiele.

“The CBN was operated as an ATM of the Cabal,a Canteen and Cash Cow of the parasitic elites of the past administration”.

The tweet, which has gained over eighty-six thousand views and over five hundred retweets, has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians.

Reacting to the tweet, Lucas, @anuforo stated that “Emefele is very corrupt he was used as Buhari’s vehicle for corruption. He needs an indictment. People like him are supposed not to be near the public treasury…He should be interrogated because… he will have a lot to say”.

Ndukwe Wilson said “he should even be imprisoned by now”.

Isi Kote-ebu questioned why Tinubu spared Buhari while Emefiele becomes the scapegoat when he stated that “Emefiele was under Buhari. Emefiele was Buhari’s appointee. EVERY action taken by Emefiele was endorsed & approved by Buhari. But guess what, Tinubu has arrested Emefiele who ran the errands. The sender, Buhari, cannot be touched. This is Nigeria for you; A funny country”

Holding a contrary view, @Chief_Naija commended Tinubu by saying “That’s why Asiwaju is a seasoned political administrator. All those things you listed, takes time to implement. He didn’t hurriedly suspend him on the first day, he used his discretion. Everything has to be done in accordance with the law”.

Doubting the credibility of the ordered probe, @segunfadairo argued asking “When was the last time that a thorough probe of corruption was carried out in Nigeria that resulted in a commendable result? Nigerian politicians moves on and tell Nigerians to pray and put their trust in God, is that not our style?”

Emefiele’s suspension follows an ongoing probe of his office and planned reforms in Nigeria’s financial sector.
