The UK government has advised its citizens against travel to parts of 11 Nigerian states while warning against all but essential travel to parts of 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
The warning was included in the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office’s most recent Nigeria travel advice, which was issued on Thursday.
According to the recommendation, which was last updated on August 20, 2026, the FCDO warned against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, and Gombe states in the northeast.
It also advised against all travel to Katsina and Zamfara in Nigeria’s northwestern states.
In the Southeast and South-South, the UK warned against all travel to riverine areas in Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states.
The FCDO identified the affected sites as “river and swamp locations accessible by boat but not by road.”
The UK government also warned against all but essential travel to Bauchi State in the northeast.
In the Northwest, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, and Sokoto states were all placed under the same advisory.
The FCDO further recommended that all but essential travel be avoided in Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara, and Benue states in the North-Central region.
The advisory also encompassed the Federal Capital Territory, which includes Abuja.
In the Southeast and South-South, the UK warned against all but necessary travel to Abia, Anambra, and Imo states, as well as non-riverine portions of Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers states.
The FCDO warned travelers that “no travel can be guaranteed safe” and encouraged anyone considering travel to Nigeria to study its travel advice before leaving.
The UK government also recommended travelers “research your destinations” and “get appropriate travel insurance” if they choose to travel.
It warned that “your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).”
The FCDO reported that the most recent update to the Nigeria travel alert includes information on IVF, fertility treatment scams, and foreign adoption.
The travel advice addresses entrance criteria, safety and security, regional dangers, health, and how to seek assistance while in Nigeria.
The FCDO stated that travel insurance should cover a traveler’s schedule, planned activities, and emergency expenses.
