The partial collapse of a two-story building undergoing manual demolition in Aboru, Lagos, has led to the death of one person while injuring two others.
The Lagos State the Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.
The statement was signed by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that the event occurred at midnight at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, in the Alimosho area of the state.
He claimed the Alpha Eagle Response Team was dispatched from the Cappa, Oshodi Response Unit, at 12:56 a.m. in response to a distress call.
According to him, the team arrived at the spot within the expected reaction time and established that personnel were trapped beneath the debris.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the building was being manually demolished when the collapse occurred,” he said.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency quickly activated the state’s Emergency Response Plan and took over incident command to coordinate the multi-agency rescue operation.
He stated that two adult males were successfully extricated alive from the wreckage during the search and rescue effort.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) provided life-saving first aid to the rescued victims.
He stated that the wounded were then brought to a nearby medical institution for additional treatment.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that one adult guy was also found dead beneath the collapsed structure.
He expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased and hoped for the rapid recovery of the injured victims.
He stated that the continuing rescue operation is being carried out by LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and LASAMBUS.
He stated that the incident area had been cordoned off to protect people and allow rescue teams free access to the scene.
