President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th Summit of Heads of State and Government for the Global South and Emerging Economic Block.

Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are known as the BRICS countries.

The President’s flight landed on the Galeao Air Force Base tarmac at 8:45 p.m. local time on Friday, where the Galeao Air Force Base Commander oversaw the Guard of Honour.

Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, confirmed this in a statement on Saturday headed ‘President Tinubu Arrives In Rio De Janeiro For BRICS Meeting’.

President Tinubu was welcomed by Brazil’s Deputy Minister for Africa and the Middle East, Carlos Sergio Sobral Duarte, as well as the Deputy Minister for Trade Promotion, Science, Technology, Innovation, and Culture.

Tinubu is visiting Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The Nigerian leader will attend a bilateral meeting hosted by Lula on Saturday, July 5, prior to the summit on June 6 and 7.

At the BRICS Summit, the president will speak in a plenary session about Nigeria’s ongoing reforms to reposition the economy for global competitiveness.

He will also meet with investors to discuss the country’s possibilities in agriculture, solid minerals, healthcare, and renewable energy.

The summit’s theme is “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”.
Deliberations will focus on health, artificial intelligence, governance, and climate change challenges.

Ahead of the Leaders’ Summit, BRICS political negotiators discussed coordinating further pledges to battle socially determined diseases, artificial intelligence governance, and climate finance.

Their primary focus was on offering concrete solutions to the Global South’s structural difficulties.

Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Prince Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Mohammed Umar Bago (Niger) are the state governors who would attend the meeting with the president.
