Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has called for greater mobilisation of long-term capital to strengthen healthcare systems across Africa, stressing the need for investments that can withstand economic and climate-related challenges.

Reflecting on a healthcare financing forum held on June 10, 2026, Osinbajo said the event brought together leaders from government, finance, development institutions and the healthcare sector to examine how Africa can build effective and resilient health systems through sustainable financing.

The discussion, hosted in partnership with Future Perspectives, focused on unlocking investment opportunities within the healthcare sector while addressing the growing impact of climate change on public health infrastructure.

According to Osinbajo, key contributions came from Dr. Abdu Mukhtar of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, who represented the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate. Mukhtar outlined government efforts aimed at expanding healthcare investments and strengthening the healthcare value chain.

Industry leaders including Dr. Tolulope Adewole of MedServe/NSIA and Dapo Akisanya, representing AfyaCare, shared practical experiences on building and financing healthcare platforms that serve Nigerians.

Participants from the financial sector also explored innovative funding solutions. They highlighted the role of blended finance, capital markets and local-currency investment instruments in supporting healthcare infrastructure capable of withstanding economic pressures and climate shocks.

Osinbajo noted that stakeholders agreed the discussions were not merely theoretical but provided practical frameworks for developing investable and climate-resilient health systems across the continent.

He emphasised that the next phase would involve translating the ideas generated at the forum into actionable policies, financing structures and investment platforms capable of delivering quality and accessible healthcare to Africans.

“The conversations we had are not theoretical. They are blueprints for building investable, climate-resilient health systems that protect lives, safeguard livelihoods, and strengthen Africa’s economies,” Osinbajo said.

He added that achieving sustainable healthcare transformation would require collaboration among governments, investors, development partners and healthcare providers across the continent.
