The Federal Government has launched a new National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System designed to improve location identification, service delivery and access to opportunities across Nigeria.
The system was announced on Thursday by Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
Launched by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), the system assigns an 11-character digital postcode to addressable buildings across the country.
New postcode identifies individual buildings
Unlike the existing postcode system, which generally identifies wider geographical areas, the new system provides a unique digital reference for individual buildings.
Tijani said the GIS-enabled postcode can narrow a location from the state or Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the local government area, district, area and specific building.
He said the system could help small businesses reach customers outside their immediate neighbourhoods while making it easier for emergency responders and public agencies to locate communities and deliver essential services.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” the minister said.
He added that an accurate postcode could make a meaningful difference for businesses, families awaiting emergency assistance and communities requiring government services.
How to find your digital postcode
Tijani said the postcode identifies a building, not an individual, and can be used alongside an existing street address.
It can also be shared with customers, delivery companies, visitors and others who need to locate a particular building.
Nigerians can find their postcodes through postcode.gov.ng, with the minister encouraging citizens to begin using and sharing them.
Tijani also urged Nigerians to provide feedback on how easy it is to find their postcodes and suggest improvements for individuals, businesses and communities.
Digital infrastructure for government services
The launch follows the Federal Executive Council’s approval of the National Digital Addressing Policy and Digital Postcode System in March 2026 as part of Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure.
In June, the Federal Government began engagements with security agencies, emergency response institutions and other stakeholders on the system, highlighting its potential applications in national security, public safety and service delivery.
By July, the government had also begun efforts to integrate the digital postcode system with ministries, departments and agencies.
Officials described the system as infrastructure capable of providing location intelligence to support government planning and decision-making.
Tijani linked the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of growing Nigeria’s economy to $1 trillion.
“As we work towards President Bola Tinubu ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper,” he said.
Chronicle NG reports that the new system is intended to make buildings easier to locate digitally, with potential applications ranging from deliveries and emergency response to government planning and public service delivery.
