Personnel of the Nigerian military have started receiving their increased salaries approved by President Bola Tinubu, the presidency has said.
Dada Olusegun, special assistant to the president on social media, disclosed this on Thursday.
Onyechi Anele, army spokesperson, and a source at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) also confirmed the development.
Olusegun said the salary increase is expected to boost the morale of military personnel involved in the fight against insecurity.
“I can categorically confirm that personnels of the Nigerian Military have now started receiving their newly increased salaries as approved by President @officialABAT in August,” the presidential aide wrote on X.
“Another critical factor that is expected to boost the morale of our frontline forces as we continue to win the war against insecurity.”
Tinubu approved new military salary package
In August, Tinubu approved a new salary package for personnel of the armed forces.
Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, said the increase ranges from 30 to 80 per cent, depending on rank.
According to Onanuga, about 250,000 military personnel will benefit from the package, which took effect on September 1.
Officers above the rank of colonel, including brigadier generals, major generals, lieutenant generals and generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will receive a 50 per cent increase, while those from private to staff sergeant will get an 80 per cent increase.
Military salary bill rises to N924bn
Onanuga said the new package will increase the annual salary bill for armed forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion.
The development comes as the federal government continues to highlight measures aimed at supporting personnel involved in the country’s security operations.
