The first batch of Nigerian evacuees arrived in the country’s capital, Abuja late Wednesday night from war-torn Sudan.
In an update provided by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), the evacuees arrived via a military aircraft.
“The first batch of Nigerians who fled war-torn Sudan arrived via military jet C13 at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 2340HRS with an estimate of 376 evacuees,” NIDCOM said in a tweet.
The agency also shared pictures of evacuees who were aboard an Air Peace airline. The total number of evacuees was not disclosed.
Chronicle NG reports that according to UN officials, Sudan’s conflict has forced 100,000 people to flee across its borders, and the violence, now in its third week, is generating a humanitarian disaster, as gunshots and explosions rang out across the city despite another peace deal.
As Sudan’s impoverished neighbours struggle with a refugee crisis and fighting obstructs aid delivery in a country where two-thirds of the population already depends on some form of foreign assistance, the conflict risks growing into a larger calamity.
