Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and head coach Michael Carrick disagree over the team’s tactical approach following a humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
The heavy loss prompted fresh doubts about Carrick’s future, as the United boss came under scrutiny following a disappointing display that left the travelling supporters frustrated.
Carrick issued an apology to the 700 Manchester United fans who had travelled to watch the match. His reaction after the final whistle also attracted attention when he walked across the pitch and repeatedly raised his hands towards the supporters.
The gesture brought to mind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reaction after United’s 4-1 defeat to Watford in November 2021, a result that was followed by his dismissal as manager the next day.
It was Fernandes’ post-match remarks, however, that sharpened the focus on the relationship between the United captain and his manager.
Speaking to TNT Sports on Wednesday after the defeat, Fernandes questioned the choice not to press Como aggressively, hinting that this approach let their opponents grow in confidence and take control of the game.
“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much of the ball to these teams, they get confidence,” Fernandes said.
When asked outright if Carrick had made tactical mistakes, the Portuguese midfielder avoided pointing the finger directly, but he did lay responsibility for the team’s approach at the feet of the coaching staff.
“That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure and take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” he added.
Fernandes’ comments implied that he felt United needed a more aggressive approach, especially when trying to win the ball back and stop opponents from finding their rhythm.
Carrick was later told about his captain’s remarks during his post-match press conference, and he responded by stressing how important effort and commitment are.
“There’s a little bit of whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play. If you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win,” the United boss said.
Although Carrick did not mention Fernandes by name in his reply, his comments put the emphasis somewhere different from what the midfielder had expressed.
While Fernandes concentrated on pressing and taking tactical risks, Carrick emphasized that players have to work hard no matter which system is used.
The exchange is likely to draw attention given Fernandes’ role as captain and how important he is to the team. Openly questioning parts of the tactical approach can add to the pressure on a manager who is already under scrutiny over results.
However, Fernandes did not go so far as to openly call for Carrick to be dismissed, and the manager’s response did not directly accuse his captain of undermining him.
Still, the defeat and the contrasting post-match comments raised questions about Manchester United’s tactical direction, how well the players carried out the game plan, and how much the dressing room and the coaching staff agree.
With pressure building after the heavy loss, Carrick faces the task of rebuilding confidence, improving performances, and making sure his players show the intensity needed in upcoming matches.
