Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau state, is in the final stages of his impending defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The entire process would be completed before the end of January 2026.

Sources within the governor’s camp said that Mutfwang has made up his mind to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — the platform on which he was elected in 2023.

The PDP is factionalised and currently facing its worst crisis ever.

President Bola Tinubu met with Mutfwang and endorsed his proposed move to the ruling party.

However, some members of the state chapter of the APC who defected from the PDP are said to be opposed to Mutfwang’s planned move.

Some of them are threatening to return to the PDP if he joins the APC, TheCable reported.

The APC national chairman, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, who is also from Plateau state, has been holding a series of meetings with the aggrieved stakeholders to soften Mutfwang’s path to the party.

During an event at the banquet hall of the government house in Jos in October 2025, the Plateau governor said he was facing pressure from political figures to defect from the PDP to the APC.

Mutfwang had said only God and the electorate who voted him into office can determine his political direction.

“But I told them that only two people can authorise me to change my party — one is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people. Have you asked me to go anywhere?” the governor had asked.

The audience responded with a loud “No”.

Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, who resigned his PDP membership owing to the crisis within the national leadership of the party, joined the Accord party on Tuesday.

In November, Agbu Kefas, governor of Taraba state, was expected to formally join the APC but the planned reception was postponed owing the killings and abductions in Taraba.

With the addition of Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, APC now controls 26 states.

The states not yet under the control of the ruling party are Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Kano, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba, and Zamfara.
