Armed herdsmen ambushed the Divisional Police Officer’s entourage in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area, Benue State, killing two policemen.
The latest attack took place on Monday evening, only days after suspected herders reportedly killed four police officers and seven locals in the same village.
According to community sources, the DPO was returning to Ayilamo from an important trip to Makurdi when his group was assaulted by armed gunmen.
One of the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, stated that the victims were among the freshly deployed Mobile Police personnel in the region.
He said, “At about 6pm on Monday, some newly deployed Mobile Police officers to the Ayilamo community were attacked and killed.
“The incident occurred while the officers were on their way from Ayilamo to escort the Divisional Police Officer, who was returning to the community from Makurdi.”
The latest incident occurred just four days after suspected armed herdsmen assaulted the Ayilamo village, murdering four police officers and seven locals.
Confirming the latest attack, DSP Peter Aondongu, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, stated that two officers in the DPO’s entourage were slain.
Aondongu said, “The DPO came to Makurdi to collect some things, and while returning to Ayilamo, he was attacked and lost two of his men in the attack.”
