Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his passing in an Instagram post on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
In the family announcement, Olusoji described the veteran actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and said the family was grateful to God for his life.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” he wrote.
He also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy during the mourning period.
“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” he added.
Olu Jacobs’ Legacy
Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most prominent veteran actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film.
According to the Lufodo Group, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and worked in British television and international film productions before returning to Nigeria. His career eventually spanned about five decades and included more than 300 Nigerian films.
He became a major figure in Nigeria’s film industry, earning recognition for his commanding performances and receiving several honours during his career.
His awards included the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and Lifetime Achievement honours for his contribution to African cinema.
Lufodo Group and Theatre
Beyond acting, Jacobs was deeply involved in developing Nigeria’s performing arts industry.
He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, were associated with the Lufodo Group, which includes Lufodo Productions, Lufodo Distributions and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts. The group describes Jacobs as its co-founder and former executive chairman.
His contribution extended beyond his screen performances, particularly through his work in theatre, film production and training.
Olu Jacobs turned 84 on July 11, 2026. His wife, Joke Silva, celebrated the milestone by referring to him as “The Lion of Lufodo”.
The death announcement comes after years of false reports about the actor’s death. His family had previously dismissed similar rumours, including in 2024.
The latest announcement, however, was made by his family on Wednesday, bringing an end to the life of one of Nigeria’s most recognisable veteran actors.
