Kylian Mbappe netted three goals, securing Jose Mourinho a victorious comeback to the Bernabeu as Real Madrid triumphed over Real Sociedad in La Liga.
Mourinho had a perfect beginning to his second tenure at Madrid over the weekend, as he managed a 2-1 triumph at Espanyol and then secured this win.
Mourinho’s team needed to remain patient against a resilient Real Sociedad, but their talent ultimately prevailed, as Mbappe delivered three outstanding goals while Jude Bellingham contributed two assists and also set up Vinicius Jr for the third.
A large crowd of supporters filled the Bernabeu on Wednesday night, excited to see the coach who delivered three domestic titles over ten years ago, securing 128 victories in 178 matches while leading the team.
However, Real Sociedad was clearly intent on disrupting the celebration and initially posed challenges for the home team.
Nonetheless, Real Madrid opened the scoring five minutes prior to halftime when Mbappe’s superb first touch maneuvered him past a defender just inside the area, and he struck the ball into the goal.
Real Sociedad reacted excellently and equalized just four minutes later when a deflected shot landed perfectly for Luka Sucic to score.
Two moments of brilliance from Bellingham enabled Real Madrid to net two additional goals during the middle of the second half.
He initially executed a clever one-two with Mbappe, enabling the latter to send a shot past the goalkeeper, after which Bellingham’s determination in the box helped him set up Vinicius Jr for an easy finish.
Mbappe concluded a spectacular evening for himself and Real Madrid by racing onto Vinicius Jr’s excellent pass into the area before delicately chipping it in.
