Gunmen have reportedly killed four policemen in Nnewi Area command, Anambra state.

The attack which was reportedly carried out on Monday by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), lasted for more than an hour.

According to reports, the assailants invaded the police station in seven vehicles and engaged the policemen there in a fierce gunbattle.

The incident caused residents of the area to panic and scamper to safety.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity revealed that the gunmen outgunned the policemen and carted away their weapons.

Reinforcement from the Nigerian Navy came to their rescue but were too late as the gunmen had already left.

Some witnesses also said that the attack was a retaliation for the killing of two IPOB members on Sunday morning.

The spokesman for the Anambra police command, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident but said that the security operatives engaged the insurgents and warded them off.

Security formations in the South East have become soft targets for Biafra militants since the begining of the year. Several security operatives have been ambushed and killed in the region which raises concern about the security architecture of the country.
