President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Fela Anikulapo Kuti, describing the iconic musician as a bold voice of the people and a revolutionary force whose music challenged injustice and transformed the global soundscape. Tinubu’s Sunday tribute comes as Fela was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy of America, making him the first African to win the honor. “Fela was more than a musician. He was a fearless voice of the people, a philosopher of freedom, and a revolutionary force whose music confronted injustice and reshaped global sound,” the President said in a statement he…
Benjamin Sesko scored a stoppage-time winner as Manchester United made it three wins in a row under Michael Carrick in a Premier League thriller with Fulham. United appeared to be on their way to triumph when Brazilians Casemiro and Matheus Cunha put them ahead twice before halftime. However, five minutes later, Raul Jimenez equalized with a superb penalty into the roof of the home net, and Kevin appeared to have grabbed a point with a thundering strike to the top corner. However, in nine minutes of additional time, primarily due to two lengthy VAR checks that resulted in United’s penalty…
Brentford claimed a brilliant win at Aston Villa with a player sent off, denting the hosts’ Premier League title ambitions. Dango Ouattara’s superb strike stunned Villa just minutes after Kevin Schade was sent off for putting his studs into Matty Cash’s midriff. Tammy Abraham, who was returning, had a goal disallowed as Villa suffered their first home league defeat in over two years. They stay third in the rankings, seven points behind champions Arsenal, while Keith Andrews’ Brentford are seventh, four points back of the top five. Villa appeared to have taken control after striker Schade was sent off, but…
Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty in stoppage time to help Real Madrid narrowly win 9-men over Rayo Vallecano. Nobel Mendy’s foul on Brahim Diaz in the 98th minute provided Mbappe the opportunity to bring Real Madrid within one point of Barcelona in the La Liga title chase. Real’s Vinicius Junior opened the goal shortly after Jude Bellingham was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Rayo Vallecano battled back and equalized shortly after the interval through Jorge de Frutos. Real’s Mbappe and Eduardo Camavinga struck the woodwork, while Vallecano were reduced to ten men with 10 minutes…
The Democratic Republic of Congo announced on Sunday that a “massive” landslide hit a militia-held mine in the country’s east, killing “at least 200 people.” Since its resurgence in 2021, the M23 armed organization has acquired significant portions of the DRC’s resource-rich east, including the Rubaya mine in North Kivu province, which it captured with Rwanda’s assistance in April 2024. According to scavengers, a portion of a hillside in the mining zone collapsed Wednesday afternoon. A second landslide hit on Thursday morning. According to the M23-appointed governor, Eraston Bahati Musanga, there were “at least 200 deaths.” The phone network has…
The Anambra state Governor Chukwuma Soludo has announced the reopening of Onitsha Main Market on Monday, February 2, barely a week after the market was shut by the state government in response to traders’ continued observance of Monday sit-at-home. In an early Sunday raid, bandits invaded Agwara local government area in Niger state, setting fire to the divisional police station and a church and kidnapping around five civilians. The attackers overran the Agwara Police Station and then burned down a portion of the community’s United Methodist Church. This is the same place where over 300 students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School were abducted last year. SP Wasiu Abiodun, the state’s police public relations officer, confirmed the occurrence, stating that the bandits attacked the police station around 3:40 a.m. He described how a police tactical unit attacked the…
At least 80 worshippers who escaped kidnapping during a bandit attack on the Kurmin Wali village in the Kajuru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, have returned home after spending about two weeks seeking safety in neighboring villages. Ishaku Dan’azumi, the Village Head of Kurmin Wali, verified the return of the victims to their families. Dan’azumi stated that, while about 177 worshippers were first believed to have been taken during the raid, 80 were later discovered to have fled and sought refuge in adjacent settlements. He did, however, reveal that 86 devotees are still taken captive by the bandits. “We have…
The National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, is delaying his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) months after engaging with the party leaders due to a lack of assurance that former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, will secure the party’s presidential ticket. Highly credible sources within the Kwankwasiya Movement, the former Kano governor’s political party, and the ADC told the press that Kwankwaso’s defection was heavily influenced by the deal. Obi and Kwankwaso are currently considering forming an alliance for a joint ADC presidential ticket in 2027. According to top lawmakers familiar with…
