Zamfara state has ordered five media outlets to close on Sunday after they covered a political rally for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which took place in violation of a state ban on political activities. The order to close came after Governor Bello Matawalle, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, banned political activities, including meetings at individuals’ homes, on October 13 due to the security situation in the state. The ban includes campaigning for February 2023 presidential elections, which began nationwide last month. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says 206,449,125 active voice subscribers were recorded in the second quarter (Q2). This is contained in the NBS Telecoms Data: Active Voice and Internet per State, Porting and Tariff Information report for Q2, released in Abuja on Sunday. According to NBS, this is an increase compared to 187,611,501 recorded in Q2 2021, representing a 10.4 per cent rise on a year-on-year basis. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, the report showed that growth stood at 3.45 per cent, an increase from the 199,558,540 subscribers recorded in Q1. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a pregnant woman, a nursing mother and a 200-level university student for drug abuse and peddling. The Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. Babafemi said the suspects were among 28 persons arrested with 9,437.6 kilograms of cannabis and 138,053 tablets of pharmaceutical opioids among others by operatives of NDLEA. He said the suspects were arrested during NDLEA interdiction operations across 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. Tragedy struck at Hawan Jaki village on Alkaleri-Gombe Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State on Saturday as 11 persons were killed in an auto crash. Yusuf Abdullahi, Sector Commander, of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Bauchi State told NAN on Sunday that 8 other persons sustained serious injuries in the crash.
