Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has declared a strike, demanding the implementation of a new salary scheme for polytechnic lecturers. According to the union, the industrial action kicks off on Tuesday, April 6th. ASUP leaders made the strike declaration today after a meeting with Federal Government officials in Abuja. The outgoing Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu has ordered operatives to be ruthless against members of the proscribed Independent People of Biafra (IPOB). The IGP gave the order when he visited the burnt Imo Police Command headquarters and the Owerri Correctional Service on Tuesday. President Muhammadu Buhari has announced DIG Usman Alkali Baba as acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP). According to the Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, the appointment takes immediate effect. Dingyadi disclosed the new appointment to State House Correspondents on Tuesday at the Presidential villa, Abuja. Saudi authorities said Monday only people immunised against Covid-19 will be allowed to perform the year-round Umrah pilgrimage from the start of Ramadan, the holy fasting month for Muslims. The Hajj and Umrah ministry said in a statement that three categories of people would be considered “immunised” — those who have received two doses of the vaccine, those administered a single dose at least 14 days prior, and people who have recovered from the infection. Five of the 39 students abducted by bandits from the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka in Kaduna State have regained freedom. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that could keep him in office in the Kremlin until 2036, the government said on Monday. Nigeria has been excluded from the list of 28 countries granted debt pardon by the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Board has approved a third tranche of grants for debt service relief for 28 member countries under the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust (CCRT). This approval followed two prior tranches approved on April 13, 2020 and October 2, 2020, respectively.
