Governor Ademola Adeleke and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have expressed their deep sorrow over the passing of the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, who died on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.

In separate statements posted on X (formerly Twitter), the two leaders paid glowing tributes to the late monarch, acknowledging his significant contributions to the development of Ijeshaland and his influence in Osun State.

Governor Adeleke, in his statement, described Oba Aromolaran as a “selfless father” and a “friend of good governance.” He expressed his condolences to the people of Ijeshaland and the monarch’s family, stating, “On behalf of the government and people of Osun State, I condole with the industrious people of Ijeshaland, the Owa Obokun traditional council, and the immediate family, on the exit of our father, Kabiyesi Oba Adekunle Aromolaran.”

Adeleke recounted his last encounter with the monarch, which took place during the flag-off ceremony for the dualization of Brewery-Palace road. “I am glad our late erudite scholar witnessed a new phase of development for Ijeshaland. We will miss him dearly, but his impact on our lives and the development of Osun State will never be forgotten,” the governor added, emphasizing the late king’s pivotal role in fostering progress in the region.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whose wife Titi is from Ijeshaland, shared a personal tribute, revealing the close relationship he enjoyed with the late Owa Obokun.

“The late Owa was more than a father-in-law to me. Each time I visited him, he accorded me the homecoming welcome of a son,” Atiku said. He described the monarch as a great leader who “personified the boldness, courage, and discipline of the Ijesha progeny.”

Atiku also offered prayers for the late monarch, saying, “As Oba Aromolaran turns his face to his Maker, I pray that his soul finds a gentle repose.” He extended his condolences to the Owa-in-Council, the royal family, and the entire people of Ijeshaland.

Oba Aromolaran, who ascended the throne in 1982, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers. His reign, which spanned over four decades, saw Ijeshaland experience significant development under his leadership. He was widely respected for his commitment to the welfare of his people and his dedication to preserving the rich cultural heritage of Ijeshaland.

Governor Adeleke and Atiku Abubakar’s heartfelt tributes highlight the monarch’s far-reaching influence, both on a personal and a political level, as his legacy continues to resonate in the region and beyond.
