Rayo Vallecano defeated Atlético Madrid 3-0 in Butarque, exposing Atlético’s fragile lineup and lifting Rayo out of the relegation zone.

The match, which began at 4:15 PM ET, saw Fran Pérez and Óscar Valentín score before Nobel Mendy secured the victory after the break.

Atlético’s excessive rotation and uninspired performance rendered them unable to match Rayo’s effort.

Rayo imposed a high, vertical game from the start, keeping Atlético on the back foot. The visitors arrived with a drastically revised XI and never established rhythm, whilst Rayo’s energy and clarity propelled them to victory.

The first goal came late in the first half, when Fran Pérez completed a scramble in the box following a beautiful sequence down the right to give the home team a well-deserved lead.

Before halftime, Óscar Valentín capitalized on a defensive mistake to make it 2-0, highlighting Rayo’s supremacy in transitions and setup play.

Rayo’s attacking balance—wide runners combining with central creativity—continued to expose Atlético’s weak defensive cohesion.

Key players on the right posed recurring problems, as the hosts took advantage of every wayward pass and shaky clearance.

Despite noticeable gaps in the stands, the Butarque crowd created a focused mood that felt crucial in elevating the home team when it counted the most.

The game was remarkable for Atlético’s wide rotation. Nine changes to the starting lineup left the team without coherence and leadership on the field.

The chosen shape and personnel failed to produce midfield control, as Atlético struggled to weave passes forward or sustain pressure long enough to test Rayo’s defense.

Individual errors and delayed reflexes exacerbated the tactical flaws, and when Atlético did produce chances, they were consistently stifled by Rayo’s organized defense and the goalkeeper’s quick interventions.

Attempts to affect the game early in the second half included aggressive substitutions, but they had little impact.

Nobel Mendy scored to make it 3-0 less than ten minutes into the second half, and the third goal effectively ended the game.

Obed Vargas, one of Atlético’s newly signed players, entered the game in the 56th minute and played 34 minutes—his longest stint with the senior team thus far—but his presence did not affect the outcome of the game.

He demonstrated willingness in the middle, but he had little influence against Rayo’s compact pressing.
