An accident involving an articulated truck at Nataco junction, along the Abuja-Lokoja highway on Wednesday morning killed a student of the nearby Kogi State Polytechnic and five others.

The tension that descended on the area spread to the International Market, as students protesting the death of their colleague in the accident went on rampage.

They destroyed a traffic light and the GYB billboard mounted at the road intersection.

A detachment of policemen that came to the scene were forced to make a retreat, having exhausted the teargas canisters they brought to the scene.

Some of the concerned residents of the area however criticised the policemen, saying “in such situation they shouldn’t have used teargas on the angry youths.”

The cement-carrying truck reportedly ran into a tricycle (Keke NAPEP), killing the student and others, including the three school pupils.

Eyewitnesses said the driver of the truck which was coming from Obajana and heading northwards, lost control around the polytechnic gate and rammed into the victims.

A Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) official confirmed the development, saying situation at the scene of the accident was still “tense.”
