US President Donald Trump has issued a strongly worded warning to Iran, urging the Islamic Republic to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump said, “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran.”
“There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Strait, or you’ll be living in hell — just watch!”
The president’s remarks mark a dramatic escalation of his threats to the Middle Eastern country, coming barely 24 hours after earlier warnings over the strait.
Earlier in March, Tehran said the strait — one of the world’s busiest oil shipping channels — would be open to all countries except the US and its allies.
Some Pakistani and Indian ships are understood to have sailed through the waterway.
However, the de facto shutdown of the strait has led to a sharp increase in global oil prices, sending fuel costs soaring and forcing governments to adopt strict energy conservation measures.
Trump’s initial deadline for Iran to reopen the strait, first set for March 22, was later extended after Tehran warned that companies with US ties would be “completely destroyed,” along with “power plants in regional countries hosting US bases,” if Iranian energy facilities were targeted.
Last week, the president suggested the strait would “open up naturally” once the conflict ends, but he resumed his threats on Saturday.
