The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disowned a fraudulent publication circulating online that purports to be a special announcement about the list of governorship candidates for the 2027 elections in six states.
The electoral umpire identified the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano, warning the public against sharing the fake publication.
In a notice posted on its official X account on Monday, October 12, 2026, INEC said the publication did not originate from the commission.
“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the statement read.
INEC urged Nigerians to disregard the publication and avoid spreading the misleading information.
The commission advised the public to obtain electoral information only from its official communication channels, including its website, verified social media accounts and news portal.
It also urged Nigerians to verify electoral announcements before sharing them to avoid being misled by fraudulent publications.
For further enquiries, the commission provided its call centre number, 0700-2255-4632, short code 4632, telephone numbers 090844444333 and 09050858629, and email address iccc@inec.gov.ng.
INEC’s warning comes days after it released the final list of candidates for the 2027 governorship elections, scheduled for early next year.
The release of the list has triggered controversy in several states following the omission of some candidates’ names, although the commission did not link the disputed omissions directly to the fraudulent publication.
