No fewer than 10 people have been killed and more than 40 injured after a freight train crashed into a double-decker bus in central Mexico, authorities have said.

The accident occurred when the bus, run by the Herradura de Plata bus business, approached an industrial zone south of the Atlacomulco district, outside Mexico City.

CCTV footage obtained by local media appears to show the passenger bus getting struck by a train as it attempted to cross a railway line on Monday.

Canadian Pacific Kansas City, the train’s operator, issued a statement expressing sympathy to the victims’ families and warning drivers to heed railroad stop signs in order to “avoid these tragic situations.”

Both the bus and train companies are working with authorities to investigate the occurrence.

Dozens of injured persons were retrieved from the debris and sent to local hospitals.

Images from the crash site appear to show pieces of the bus’s roof missing, the front windscreen damaged, and the rear missing.

According to the State of Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office, seven women and three men were slain, and several of the injured were in critical condition, reports Reuters.

This is not the first fatal bus crash recorded in Mexico this year.

According to officials, a bus, tanker truck, and van collided in central Mexico in May, killing at least 21 people.

In February, at least 41 persons were killed in a bus accident in southern Mexico, according to the Tabasco state government.
