Nigerian Afrobeats singer Tiwatope Savage, widely known as Tiwa Savage, said she was “crucified” for contributing to national issues.
She made this known in an Instagram post following growing public pressure for celebrities to use their platforms to vocalize concerns regarding the country’s escalating insecurity.
The star revealed that her decision to maintain a lower profile on these national issues is not born out of indifference but rather a direct response to the hostility she has faced in the past.
Responding to a fan on social media who urged her to speak up, the singer explained that previous attempts to address sensitive national issues had left her open to intense public backlash.
She wrote, “When I spoke I was crucified for it but trust me that won’t stop me from still being active.” Just know that just because you might not see my post about it does not mean I am not doing anything. I just don’t have to validate my actions, God sees. May God help us and guide us all with the right wisdom to overcome this tragedy.”
In recent weeks, there has been a resurgence in public discourse demanding that prominent Nigerian entertainers and influencers take a more vocal stance against the deteriorating security situation in the country. Many social media users have argued that celebrities, given their massive influence and social media following, should serve as a collective voice for the masses against rising kidnappings, banditry, and violent crimes.
Tiwa Savage has been a target of intense scrutiny and criticism from the public, particularly due to her well-known friendship with Seyi Tinubu, the son of the Nigerian president. Critics have often cited this affiliation as a potential reason for her perceived silence and reluctance to participate in vocal anti-government protests, with some accusing her of being too closely tied to people in power to speak objectively on state-led failures.
While some voices argue that silence is a form of complicity, others, including singer Portable and various public figures, have pointed to the significant personal and professional risks involved in speaking out, ranging from potential intimidation to the loss of industry endorsements.
Despite ongoing criticism, Tiwa Savage maintained that her commitment to the country remains intact. She confirmed that her advocacy occurs outside the public eye.
