Youri Tielemans netted a penalty in the dying moments of extra time, propelling Belgium to a remarkable comeback from two goals behind to overcome Senegal in a thrilling last-32 World Cup match.

The late win secured them a round of 16 clash with either the United States or Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Rudi Garcia’s team appeared to be on the verge of elimination as they fell behind a strong Senegal by two goals with just four minutes left in regular time.

However, substitute Romelu Lukaku headed in Thomas Meunier’s cross to provide them with a ray of hope.

In the 89th minute, they seized the surprising opportunity as Leandro Trossard’s delivery into the box bypassed goalkeeper Mory Diaw, allowing skipper Tielemans to head in and equalize at 2-2, leading to extra time.

The Belgian duo was previously observed in a passionate dispute before the hydration break in the second half, with Lukaku intervening to mediate.

Their resurgence shocked Senegal after Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr had provided them with a well-deserved 2-0 advantage.

After saving themselves in regular time, Belgium grabbed a disputed victory in the 125th minute.

Following Dodi Lukebakio’s shot that skimmed the crossbar, a penalty was granted for Lamine Camara’s sliding tackle on Tielemans just prior to that opportunity, after a video assistant referee (VAR) check lasting seven minutes.

Aston Villa midfielder Tielemans stepped up to smoothly place the penalty into the upper corner and determine the result.
