Diogo Jota scored twice and Bruno Fernandes also scored as Portugal smashed Luxembourg to keep their perfect Euro 2024 qualification record intact.

Portugal led 4-0 at halftime despite the suspension of Cristiano Ronaldo, with two goals each from Goncalo Inacio and Goncalo Ramos.

Jota made it 5-0, Ricardo Horta added a sixth, and Jota finished with a seventh.

Fernandes scored the eighth goal, while former Chelsea player Joao Felix added a late ninth.

Fernandes, a Manchester United midfielder, set up the opening goal with a cross from the right flank with the outside of his boot and also assisted on Portugal’s fourth and fifth goals.

Bernardo Silva set up Manchester City’s second goal, and Liverpool forward Jota, who also struck the crossbar in the first half, delivered the pass for Horta to score.

It means Roberto Martinez’s men has won all six of their Euro 2024 Group J qualifying matches since he took over as head coach in January, replacing Fernando Santos, who resigned following Portugal’s World Cup quarterfinal defeat against Morocco.

Leaders Portugal has scored 24 goals and surrendered none in six games.

They will qualify for next summer’s Euro 2024 in Germany with three games to spare if they beat second-placed Slovakia at home on October 13 and Luxembourg loses away to Iceland.

Earlier in the day, England defeated the Luxembourg under-21 team 3-0 in a European Under-21 2025 qualifier.
