Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Sunday visited the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, assuring him that efforts toward securing his release were ongoing.

Otti was accompanied by Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; the Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

In a statement issued following the visit, Ekeoma said the governor encouraged Kanu to stay strong, noting that contacts he began more than two years ago had been increased.

He described Otti as saying the problem will be settled “administratively” and expressed hope that Kanu would soon be released.

The governor was also claimed to have informed Kanu that the Sultan of Sokoto had expressed support for a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

According to Ekeoma, Otti joked that the Sultan had said Kanu was now his “subject” and would be turbaned, which elicited laughs from the IPOB leader.

Kanu, who was said to be in good spirits throughout the visit, thanked the governor for the gesture.

He allegedly told Otti that he was happy with Abia State’s development progress and urged him to continue prioritizing good governance for the benefit of the people.
