Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is expected to resign from his position as he prepares to contest the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 elections, according to sources familiar with the development.

The anticipated move follows a directive issued by President Bola Tinubu, requiring all political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to step down on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was confirmed in a statement by Dewan Goshit, head of information and public relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

Tuggar’s expected exit comes shortly after the 2026 national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where most members of the party’s National Working Committee were returned unopposed.

Attention has now shifted to cabinet members believed to be nursing political ambitions but yet to formally declare them.

Supporters of Tuggar from Bauchi State, who attended the convention, say a formal declaration of his governorship ambition is imminent, citing growing grassroots and political backing.

Tuggar previously served as a member of the House of Representatives, representing Gamawa Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2011. He later served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany between 2017 and 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2023.

With the resignation deadline fast approaching, focus remains on political appointees expected to comply as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
