Senator Shehu Sani has called for calm over the sentencing of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
Sani, in a statement shared on his official X page on Friday, stated that the life sentence issued to Kanu is not the “end of his life.”
His comment comes following the life sentencing of Kanu over terrorism and other related charges.
The sentencing, which has attracted widespread condemnation, has led to accusations and counter-accusations, with many alleging that the trial was influenced for political reasons.
Reacting to Nnamdi Kanu’s sentencing, Sani, who reminisced on his imprisonment during the military era, stated that “some of us have been through life imprisonment, and we survived it.”
He noted that the case of the IPOB leader can still be resolved ”in the interest of peace.”
Sani said, ”Sentencing a man to life imprisonment is not the end of his life. Some of us have been through life imprisonment, and we survived it.
“I served my own life imprisonment in Aba Prisons, Abia State, after spending a year in Kiri Kiri and Port Harcourt prisons.
”The inmates and warders treated me well, except for some few tough guys. There is still room for dialogue to resolve the issue in the interest of peace.”
The former Kaduna Central senator added that “life imprisonment is a phase and not the end. One of my prison cellmates, who was also sentenced to life imprisonment, was Obj. So make you all calm down.”
