Nicki Minaj, the Trinidadian rapper and singer-songwriter, has claimed that powerful figures in the music industry deliberately sideline talented artistes who refuse to comply with their demands.
During a recent appearance on The Bryce Crawford Podcast, Minaj said many of the obstacles she and other artistes have encountered are orchestrated by influential individuals, though she declined to name any specific persons or groups.
She described the industry’s early years as largely positive, recalling a time when artistes genuinely supported one another.
However, she noted that her perspective shifted as she began to observe vindictive behaviour among certain industry players.
“I think it took a while because in the beginning it was pretty much a lot of fun. Honestly, it was. We had so much fun rooting for each other. I thought that’s how it would always be. I thought everyone just rooted for each other to win,” she said.
“I started realising that if you don’t get money with one person or a specific group of people, they don’t want you to get money at all and that when I started realising that oh my God what did I sign up for?”
Minaj further alleged that some influential figures treat musicians as “properties” to be exploited for profit, and that they sabotage those who refuse to participate in such arrangements.
She also spoke about the personal toll of her career, describing what she called “constant spiritual warfare” resulting from her decision not to conform to industry expectations.
“It was like constant spiritual warfare. I wish I would have known sooner that this music industry was such a spiritual experience because I felt like I brought a knife to a gunfight,” she said.
“Without having that information, I didn’t feel equipped for what was ahead, and no one had given me a heads up. I had to figure it out when I got there.”
