Gunmen have killed Alhaji Garba Buba, the All Progressives Congress chairman of Rantan Ward in Kano State’s Bebeji Local Government Area, and another citizen, Sulaiman Zunduma, in a new attack on the village.
The victims were killed on Sunday night after suspected gunmen stormed the Rantan community and opened fire on inhabitants, causing many to run for safety.
A local, Hamza Isah Rantan, verified the attack in a Facebook post, saying the gunmen attacked the neighborhood at night and shot at residents.
According to Hamza, Buba was shot inside his home and later died in a hospital, while Zunduma was killed instantly after being shot during the raid.
He wrote, “On Sunday night, kidnappers attacked our town, Rantan, where they shot Alhaji Garab Buha, the APC ward chairman in Rantan, who later died in a hospital. They also killed another resident, Sulaiman Zunduma.
“We pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and heals the injured.”
The development was also corroborated by Kano State APC spokesperson, Auwalu Soja, who stated that the ward chairman was assassinated on Sunday.
However, Soja stated that the party would publish an official statement regarding the incident.
As of the time of reporting this article, the Kano State Police Command has not issued a comment regarding the attack or revealed whether any suspects had been detained.
The latest incident occurred less than 24 hours after suspected bandits invaded the Chiromawa hamlet in the state’s Garun Mallam Local Government Area and kidnapped the Sarkin Noman Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo Chiromawa.
The traditional leader was eventually rescued unharmed after security personnel, together with members of the community, followed the attackers and forced them to abandon their target.
According to the police, three residents—Yusif Nasiru, 20, Salisu Garba, 20, and Ibrahim Hassan, 20—were shot during the Garun Mallam incident and were taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for treatment.
The command stated that tactical and patrol teams, backed by personnel from neighboring divisions, were mobilized after receiving a distress call at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.
It then conducted confidence-building patrols surrounding Garun Mallam and launched a manhunt for the fleeing attackers.
