Manchester City were brought back down to earth as Champions League holders, and Paris St-German delivered a masterclass at the Etihad Stadium.
With former manager Pep Guardiola watching on his return to the club, City played their first home match since being found guilty of violating Premier League financial regulations.
Amid a defiant atmosphere among City’s supporters, PSG stunned Enzo Maresca’s team by taking a three-goal lead before half-time.
Desire Doue put PSG ahead in the 13th minute with a low finish beyond City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, then supplied the second two minutes later with an excellent cross that Ousmane Dembele headed home.
PSG were dismantling City, with Vitinha making it 3-0 after 32 minutes by finishing clinically following superb combination play from Maghnes Akliouche and Warren Zaire-Emery.
Maresca made three changes at half-time, and City emerged as a transformed side after the break, creating numerous chances before Erling Haaland reduced the deficit with a flicked header from Iliman Ndiaye’s cross eight minutes into the second half.
City’s hopes of completing a comeback were abruptly ended after 62 minutes when Donnarumma first saved Akliouche’s shot, only for the ball to rebound behind him and into the net.
City continued to fight, with Haaland scoring his second and seeing another attempt miraculously denied by PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov, before Donnarumma provided the final drama by saving Ferran Torres’ late penalty.
