Four National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and a soldier have been confirmed dead in a road accident along the Yola–Mubi road in Adamawa State.
The accident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 1:50 p.m. in the Narehi district of the Girei/Song Local Government district.
SP Suleiman Nguroje, the Adamawa State Police Command spokesman, confirmed the event in a statement on Thursday.
According to the statement, the incident occurred between a military weapons truck traveling from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus transporting five passengers from Yola to Mubi.
“The unfortunate incident involved a military gun truck traveling from Gombi towards Yola and a commercial Hummer bus conveying five (5) passengers from Yola to Mubi.
“Preliminary findings reveal that both vehicles were involved in a head-on collision, resulting in the commercial bus flipping over and bursting into flames,” he said.
All five occupants of the bus were reportedly burnt to death.
“Preliminary identification reveals that four of the deceased were serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) posted to Adamawa State.”
“They are Suleiman Juliet, female, and Usman Shuaibu, male, both indigenes of Kaduna State, while the remaining are yet to be identified,” he said.
The command also acknowledged that a soldier assigned to the military vehicle was killed in the collision.
Police officers and emergency responders transported the victims’ remains to the Specialist Hospital in Yola.
Kabir Hassan, the state’s Commissioner of Police, extended his condolences to the deceased’s families, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the NYSC.
