A farmer was killed in a suspected bandit attack in the Wodata community of Zambufu, Kwara State on Friday.
According to reports, the victim, simply known as Amos, was slain during the attack, which occurred about Jummat prayer time Friday.
According to a village source named Hassan, Amos and his brother were collecting cassava on their farmland when the bandits struck.
“He was on top of a tractor while others were loading cassava. Immediately the attackers were sighted, those on the ground fled for safety.
“Before he could dismount from the tractor, he was shot in the abdomen,” he said.
The farmer was said to have been rushed to a nearby health facility and later referred to Ilorin for advanced treatment.
“Sadly, he died on the way due to excessive blood loss,” the source added.
Nupeko Lafiagi TV highlighted the area’s weak medical infrastructure, emphasizing that the sole available facility is a primary health center in Zambufu, which has limited capacity to address serious crises.
“The incident happened less than one kilometer from Wodata village. This raises fresh concerns about the security of rural communities, especially farmers,” the source said.
Meanwhile, attempts to obtain formal confirmation from the Kwara State Police Command were futile as of the time of reporting this story.
“I have not been briefed about the incident, but I will get back to you as soon as I have information,” the police public relations officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said.
The latest killing comes only days after suspected bandits reportedly assaulted Nuku village in Kaiama Local Government Area, killing five forest guards and raising fears about escalating insecurity in Kwara North.
