Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress, or APC, Chairman in the Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another person in his vehicle.
The incident took place on Thursday along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway near Ojuwo Olijo in the state’s Ofu Local Government Area.
ASP Afusat Saliu, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, verified the gunmen attack in a statement released to journalists in Lokoja on Friday.
Saliu stated that the attack began at 5 p.m., when armed assailants emerged from the nearby jungle and opened fire on the vehicle.
She said a blue Toyota Corolla with the plate number GWA 636 CH was subsequently discovered abandoned on the highway.
“The driver, identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead in the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the assailants,” the statement said.
The police spokesperson stated that the command, in coordination with other security agencies, had increased operations in the area, with personnel combing the surrounding woodland to locate and rescue the abducted victim and catch the offenders.
She added that the deceased had been transported to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy, while the command was investigating all relevant leads in connection with the event.
The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, ordered ongoing security operations in the damaged route and efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The command advised motorists and people near the route to be watchful and report any suspicious movements to police or other security services as soon as possible.
