The Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has condemned the unlawful execution of 28-year-old singer Oghenemena Ogidi by a police officer in Effurun.

Oborevwori, in a statement released on Thursday by his chief press secretary, Festus Ahon, expressed deep astonishment at the killing, emphasizing that no person deserves to be subjected to such cruelty.

He called the act barbarous and a serious violation of the sacredness of human life.

“The killing of Mena Ogidi by ASP Nuhu Usman is unwarranted, unprovoked, and barbaric. It is unlawful and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life,” the governor said.

He expressed his profound sympathies to the deceased’s family, stressing that the safety and dignity of all citizens remain top priorities under his government.

“No citizen deserves to be subjected to such brutality and death. The protection of lives remains paramount under my administration,” he added.

The governor praised the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the Nigeria Police Force’s leadership for taking swift and decisive disciplinary action, including approving the dismissal and prosecution of the officers found culpable—a decision that has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.

He stated that the state government would closely watch the matter until it was resolved, support the deceased’s family, and remain committed to maintaining the rule of law and fostering a just and humane Delta State.

Chronicle NG reports that the incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun received intelligence about Ogidi, who was reportedly apprehended while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the team, allegedly discharged his firearm, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, approved the firing and criminal prosecution of the policemen implicated in the fatal shot.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the decision came after disciplinary hearings into the April 26, 2026, incident that resulted in the death of 28-year-old Mena Ogidi.
