The Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered the firing and criminal prosecution of policemen involved in the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the police said the decision came after disciplinary hearings into the April 26, 2026, incident that resulted in the death of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.

According to the Force, all officers involved in the incident were promptly removed from the Delta State Command and sent to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they faced expedited disciplinary procedures.

The Force Disciplinary Committee determined that the principal officer acted in clear breach of operational rules.

“Findings established unequivocally that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms. His actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law,” the statement read.

The committee then recommended the immediate firing of Usman and other negligent officers, which was authorized by the Inspector-General of Police and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for approval.

The Force stated that once administrative procedures were completed, the concerned officers would be turned over to the competent legal authorities for prosecution.

The police reiterated their position, saying, “No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law,” and emphasized that any officer who violated this principle would face disciplinary and legal consequences.

It also promised that the procedure would be transparent, noting that “the Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served.”

The police offered their condolences to the deceased’s family and assured them that the event would not be taken lightly.

The incident occurred following a viral video of Ogidi being shot during a police operation in Effurun on April 26.

Police claimed he was arrested while reportedly attempting to carry a parcel suspected of containing a firearm; however, the officer in command discharged his weapon in breach of established protocols.

The development adds to the continuous scrutiny of police conduct, as authorities continue to highlight responsibility and adherence to the rule of law in their operations.
