Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been authorized to run in the May general election after an electoral court overturned a restriction on his candidature. Zuma was forbidden from running for office by the electoral commission last month after being found in contempt of court. According to a BBC story on Tuesday, the commission stated that the constitution prohibited people from holding public office if they had been convicted of a felony and sentenced to more than 12 months in prison. The new deputy governor of Edo State, Omobayo Godwin, has promised to remain loyal to the state governor, Godwin Obaseki. Omobayo said he would only do whatever the governor asked him to do. Adegoke Fayoade, the Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, has ordered a crackdown on phone thieves in the state. The police boss vowed to penalize any divisional police officer whose jurisdiction included recording the latest robbery of phones snatched in broad daylight by miscreants. This comes on the heels of a notice about an increasing security problem in Lagos State, where some miscreants take phones from unsuspecting passersby in broad daylight and then demand money before returning the phone to its owner.
