Officials of the Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and military officers have battled over the military’s plan to close the busy Adeniji-Falomo Road.  The clash between the two groups is still happening as of the time of this publication. A fire outbreak on Friday night damaged a section of the popular Kaura Modern Market, located opposite the Prince and Princess Market in Abuja’s Kaura District.  The inferno, which apparently began about 11 p.m. on Friday, destroyed over 40 shops, destroying products such as food, appliances, and household goods. The House of Representatives has voiced grave concern about the abduction of 20 medical students in Benue State, urging security services to act quickly.  According to sources, the abducted students, twelve from the University of Jos and eight from the University of Maiduguri, were kidnapped on Thursday, August 15, 2024, while on their way to a conference sponsored by the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students in Enugu. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has refuted rumours of selling employment slots to Nigerians and anyone who wishes to buy. Amnesty International has stated that over 1000 #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters are currently in prison custody nationwide following the recent hunger protests. The protests, which took place between August 1 and 10, turned violent in several regions of the country, with reports of looting and vandalism in multiple states. The ECOWAS Regional Centre for Surveillance and Disease Control reports that monkeypox (Mpox) is still spreading in the region, with 44 confirmed cases and one fatality by the end of Epi Week 33, 2024.  The hardest-hit countries in ECOWAS are Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, and Ghana. A Muslim cleric in Ilorin, Kwara State, has called on Islamic faithfuls to stop blocking the road during prayers. While delivering a sermon on Friday, the cleric mentioned that the blocking of roads during prayers by worshippers is inimical to the safety of the public. The police have been dispatched to rescue the 20 medical students who were kidnapped on the Otukpo-Otukpa-Enugu Road on Thursday evening.
