The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered improved safety precautions nationwide to ensure a safe and conducive atmosphere for the 64th Independence anniversary.  The IG has also ordered the deployment of adequate human and tactical resources to ensure maximum security for the celebration. A fire broke out on Sunday night at the Kwara State High Court Complex in Ilorin, the state capital, and destroyed a courtroom.  According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out just after 8 p.m. on Sunday, burning one courtroom before being brought under control by the State Fire Service. The Kwara State incident service reported that the incident was started by a power surge in the Government Reserved Area, which houses the High Court building. Gunmen have killed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) councillorship candidate in Pari Ward, in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Raymond Timothy, and his brother, James Timothy. This was announced by a PDP chieftain in the local government area, Barnabas Chawai, on Sunday. The Nigerian Army claims its troops have killed eight terrorists and rescued 40 abducted people in a series of synchronised operations around the country.  In a tweet on its official X handle on Monday, the Army stated that recent wins have tightened the noose around the necks of unrepentant terrorists and their collaborators. Rescue workers in Nepal’s capital searched amid ruined homes on Monday, after monsoon floods killed at least 192 people throughout the Himalayan country.  Floods and landslides are frequent throughout the monsoon season in South Asia, which runs from June to September, but experts fear climate change is exacerbating the problem.
