Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) on Monday resumed the Abuja-Kaduna train service which was suspended following a gunmen attack in March. The gunmen killed many passengers on the Abuja-Kaduna service and kidnapped several dozens for ransom. The Nigerian military in October secured the release of the remaining 23 hostages from the train attack. President Muhammadu Buhari’s government had said the Abuja-Kaduna train service would only start once all hostages were freed. “We are starting afresh and I pray we will not have a re-occurrence of that ugly incidence by God’s grace,” said Ganiyat Adesina-Uthman, a lecturer who was travelling to Kaduna…

Several people have been killed in explosions at two Russian military airfields, according to reports. A fuel tanker exploded killing three and injuring six in an airfield near the city Ryazan, south-east of Moscow, Russian state media is reporting. Another two people are reported to have been hurt in an explosion at an airfield in the Saratov region. It is not known what caused the blasts. Both areas are hundreds of kilometres from the Ukrainian border. Long-range Russian strategic bombers are believed to be based at the Engels airbase in the Saratov region. Bandits in Nigeria killed a dozen worshippers, including an imam, and kidnapped several others from a mosque on Saturday night, local residents said on Sunday, in the latest attack by armed gangs in the north of the country. Armed gangs, known as bandits, attack communities where security is stretched, killing people or kidnapping them for ransom. The gangs also demand villagers pay protection fees to be allowed to farm and harvest their crops.
